What WhatRock will not do
- It will not call itself a lab. Every identification is educational — never a laboratory analysis, an appraisal, or a certification of any kind.
- It will not invent a confident guess. A low confidence result shows up to three candidates instead of one overconfident answer, and gem-grade material always shows Low confidence with a caution.
- It will not tell you where or whether to collect. You're responsible for local laws and land rules — collecting is prohibited in many protected areas, including US national parks.
- It will not keep your specimen photos. A photo is sent to be identified and is not retained afterward. There is no account and no login, and it does not collect your location.
Questions
Is this a lab analysis or an appraisal?
No, and the app never says it is. WhatRock is an educational field tool for curiosity and learning. For anything that matters — buying, selling, insuring or academic use — see a qualified geologist, gemologist or accredited laboratory.
What does the confidence level mean?
High means the specimen's features are clearly visible and match one entry well. Medium means the match is good but something is uncertain. Low means WhatRock isn't sure — it shows up to three possible matches instead of guessing. Gem-grade material (diamond, ruby, gold and similar) is always Low, with a note on why.
Where do the field notes come from?
Our own field guide, written from public educational sources like the USGS, the National Park Service and state geological surveys — never copied from another app or from a mineral database. Field notes are labelled "Typical for <name>," not a measurement of your specific specimen.
Does it work without a connection?
Identifying a new specimen needs a connection. Specimens you've already saved stay in your on-device collection, and Premium adds an offline copy of the full field guide for the trail.
How do I cancel a subscription?
In the iPhone Settings app: tap your name, then Subscriptions. Cancelling there stops any future charge. Refunds are handled by Apple under their policies.
Is there an Android version?
Not yet. WhatRock is iPhone-only today.
